Roland - VS SOUND Canvas VA 1.1.6 VSTi x64. Description: First introduced in 1991, the Roland Sound Canvas series has long become the standard for GS sound modules. With Sound Canvas VA you can now use classic sounds in your program as a VSTi plugin. It includes 1,600 high quality sounds, plus 64 different insert effects, main effects such as. Sound Canvas Va Vst Download. This project is for matlab development of a virtualsound level meter. The program will read in a.wav file and allow the. I can't find a way to direct the output of the (MIDI) tracks to the Sound Canvas VA VST plugin. I've had a hardware Sound Canvas (SC-8850) in the past and was able to play the MIDI files through that unit, but it seams that Cakewalk doesn't recognize the Sound Canvas VA as a VST-instrument that can handle MIDI data.

Even though the SC-VA contains the same number of tones as the SC-8820, you’ll notice Roland has rounded down its spec number to 1,600 which is only an approximation. A more detail counting of tones on the SC-VA/SC-8820/Sound Canvas for iOS revealed there are 1,483 after discarding all of the duplicates. Based on the Roland SC-series hardware modules, the Sound Canvas VA is a GS-compatible software synth with support for VSTi (Windows and Mac) and AU (Mac) plug-in formats. Included are 1,600 popular sounds and 63 drum sets that are ready to play, and a single plug-in instance supports 16 parts with up to 64 notes of polyphony.

Likewise SC-88Pro & SC-8850 actually have less than 1,117 & 1,640 tones respectively.

You can cross out the duplicates by referring to the tone list contained in the appendix section of the Owner’s Manual. For example, notice there are four different tones of the same patch name called Jazz Gt. on SC-8820/SC-88Pro/SC-88/SC-55 Maps? But effectively you only get two different jazz guitar sounds residing on Program Change 027 originally from the SC-88Pro & SC-55. The jazz guitar on SC-8820 Map is identical to that of SC-88Pro. Likewise you would get the same sound if you had chosen SC-88 Map compared to SC-55.

On the SC-8850’s end, there are 130 ‘enhanced’ tones, mostly layered with additional voices. Because I own the SC-8850 module, songs created on it using these tones would not sound too different, in fact they seemed to be compatible when played back on an SC-VA or SC-8820 especially in multitimbral mode.

So with only 16 parts (including the 2 drum parts) & limited polyphony, how does the SC-VA perform using midi files meant for the SC hardware counterpart? Would it sound the same if we attempt to play our old compositions based on 32 parts SC-88Pro or 64 parts SC-8850? The bold answer is “Yes” provided you can achieve similar results on a single or double SC-8820 as the Sound Canvas VA is 100% compatible with the SC-8820.

Unlike the Sound Canvas for iOS which is truly limited to 16 parts on a single iOS device, the SC-VA installed on a PC/Mac will essentially do away all the limitations due to its ability to run multiple plugins simultaneously such as:

  • 128 voices/polyphonic by using two (2) SC-VA instances
  • 64 parts by using four (4) SC-VA instances
  • 8 drum parts by using four (4) SC-VA instances

In fact when you open up four (4) SC-VAs on a single project, the combined VST performance footprint on your computer is still relatively small. You will have the following synergistic specifications:

  • 256 voices/polyphony
  • 64 parts (already mentioned above)
  • 8 drum parts (already mentioned above)
  • 4 independent Insert Effects

Wanna expand your SC setup to something more creative? Assuming you’re using Cubase Elements 8 as the preferred DAW, you can open up to 16 SC-VA on the rack instruments. Divide the 64 parts by 16 plugins and you can use 4 midi tracks per plugin. You get the following specs:

  • 1,024 voices/polyphony
  • 64 parts
  • 32 drum parts
  • 16 Insert Effects

You are still limited to 64 midi tracks. However your Insert Effects count now increases to 16 and your drum parts selection can go as high as 32 simultaneously. Remember there are 63 different drum presets to choose from and the SC-VA drums collection are also identical to SC-8850/SC-8820/SC for iOS.

At this stage, let’s push Cubase Elements 8 to its extreme by adding 24 more Instrument Tracks using the SC-VA. However this time we’ll limit one part per instrument track so as to make the setup practical (unlike what I posted in the previous blog). The resultant specification is as follows:

  • 2,560 voices/polyphony
  • 88 parts (64 from midi tracks + 24 from instrument tracks)
  • All 63 drum presets available simultaneously – no need for a Program Change mid-way thru a song
  • 40 Insert Effects

Hard core SC users would drool over this potential specifications operating out of one computer! Because the software technology on SC has finally overtaken my old set up, I finally retired my SC-8850 hardware early this year.

Some might argue that the software plugin is expensive when you compare with the equivalent iOS app which you can have for USD 20. However you will not be able to expand or multiply the parts & polyphony unless you install on multiple iOS devices. In terms of usefulness and scalability, the SC-VA seems to make more sense when implemented on any current DAW.
